Wolfgang Büchner, deputy editor-in-chief, Deutsche Presse-Agentur

After majoring in political science at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Hamburg, he completed his studies in journalism on a scholarship from Munich's "Institut zur Förderung publizistischen Nachwuchses (IFP)." In 1990, he became one of the founding journalists of the youth newspaper Neue Presse/Express in Halle, East Germany. In 1991, he became a correspondent for the Associated Press news agency in Hamburg. From September 1995 to August 1999, he worked as a news editor and reporter for Reuters. In September 1999, he was appointed managing editor of the Financial Times Deutschland newspaper, which launched in February 2000. In June 2001, he joined SPIEGEL ONLINE as managing editor. In 2003, Wolfgang Büchner was appointed deputy editor-in-chief of SPIEGEL ONLINE, 2008 he got promoted to the role of editor-in-chief.

In July 2009 Büchner took over the job as deputy editor-in-chief at the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa). In January 2010 he is going to succeed now editor-in-chef Wilm Herlyn at dpa.
